問題詳情

Some teenagers become overloaded with stress. When it happens, inadequatelymanaged stress can lead to social withdrawal, aggression, physical illness, or drug and/oralcohol use. When we perceive a situation as difficult or painful, changes occur in ourminds and bodies to prepare us to react to danger. As a natural physical mechanism, this“fight or flight response” includes faster heart and breathing rate, upset stomach, a sense ofdread and/or a desire to escape. As soon as we decide that a situation is no longerdangerous, a “relaxation response” occurs to help us relax and calm down, which includesdecreased heart and breathing rate and a sense of well being. Teenagers that develop“relaxation responses” and other stress management skills feel less helpless and have morechoices when dealing with stress. To handle stress well, we should first of all exercise and eat regularly, and avoidexcess caffeine intake which causes feelings of anxiety and disturbance. Besides, settingsmall goals and breaking tasks into smaller attainable chunks may help lower anxiety. After a short-term goal is achieved, we can schedule breaks and enjoyable activities, suchas music, art, sports, or socializing. Decreasing negative self talk and challengingnegative thoughts about ourselves with positive thoughts are ways to enhance mentalhealth. For example, “My life will never get better” can be transformed into “I may feelhopeless now, but my life will probably get better if I work at it and get some help.”Finally we should accept what we are and realize no one is perfect. If there are signs ofbeing overly stressed, we can always go to a consultation with an adolescent psychiatristor qualified mental health professional.
