四、課外閱讀測驗 8%The Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho, or the Maracanã as it’s more commonly known, is an iconicsports stadium of historic value in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Soon to host several soccer matches includingthe final at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the stadium was constructed for the exact same internationalsporting event back in 1950. A crew of more than 10,000 workers broke ground in 1948 and laboredceaselessly to create a structure that would reflect the pride of all Brazilians. They did just that, and uponits completion, the Maracana had a total capacity of more than 200,000, far exceeding the world’s largeststadium at the time, Glasgow’s Hampden Park.Despite having its capacity reduced to around 80,000 in the late 1990s, when it was converted to anall-seater, the colossal Maracana stadium has seen some of the most unforgettable moments in soccerhistory. The first was in 1950 during the final match of the World Cup. An official crowd of 174,000spectators were in attendance to see the host country’s team compete against Uruguay’s for the title. Some say the actual number was around 220,000, about 10 percent of Rio de Janeiro’s population at thetime. Brazil scored first and looked set to being crowned the champion. However, against the odds,Uruguay scored two goals, crushing the dream of a nation. All at once, the entire stadium and the worldwere thrown into silence . Brazilian national team was defeated 2-1 on their home soil. This significantmoment is recorded in history as the Maracanazo, one of the biggest upsets in the world of soccer.Another milestone for the grand stadium came on November 19, 1969, when one of Brazil’s ownsons and extraordinary soccer player, Pele, scored his 1,000th career goal, causing a flood of fans to takethe pitch in celebration. Still another emotional event took place on January 20, 1983, when the ashes ofthe late Garrincha, one of Brazil’s all-time greats, were brought to the Maracana, where thousands paidtheir last respects to their beloved idol.
