問題詳情

六、閱讀測驗:5%Thanksgiving is a day to take stock of all the blessings in your life and show thanks for them. But like most holidays, many Americans feel the holiday traditions have become routine and empty of their original meaning. After all, what does stuffing yourself with turkey and watching a football game have to do with being grateful? Many of those searching for deeper meaning have found it through volunteerism.Thanksgiving Day is usually the biggest day for volunteering across America. Many homeless shelters, service organizations, and churches host a big, free Thanksgiving feast for people in need. Up to twenty thousand people may be served at a single event! To help with the work, hundreds of thousands of Americans spend part or all of their Thanksgiving Day making these dinners memorable. They help prepare the food, decorate the dining area, set the tables, and serve food to the poor and homeless. In some places there are games, activities and entertainment planned for the children and the adults. In other cases, meals are delivered to the homes of the elderly and sick who are not able to leave their homes. Most volunteers agree that helping to make a needy family’s Thanksgiving Day special is the best way to remember and appreciate their own good fortune. It is hard to take all that one has for granted when faced with others who are lacking some of the most basic necessities of life. And rather than showing thanks by consuming more, these people find much more meaning in giving to those who don’t have enough.
