(B) Have you ever seen pictures of Dalmatian dogs riding on the fire trucks of long ago? One hundred years ago, thesebeautiful dogs with white fur and black spots were a common sight on horse-drawn fire engines. Why were these dogs chosenby the firefighters to be their traveling companions?Dalmatians, a lean, shorthaired dog, are best known for their lovely white coat of fur and their unique black or brown spots. For hundreds of years, Dalmatian dogs have been a great helper to people. Long ago, Dalmatians were used as shepherds, hunters and guard dogs. Dalmatians became known as “coach dogs” because they ran along next to horse-drawn carriages andhelped to drive away bandits and farm animals that may have wandered into the road. The Dalmatian lived in stables and gotalong very well with horses. The ability to live and work comfortably with horses is what led the Dalmatian to become a firehouse mascot in the United States. Dalmatians helped to keep the road clear for the quickly moving fire trucks. They could beseen riding on the trucks or racing alongside the horses as they hurried to the scene of a blazing fire. When cars were invented, horse-drawn carriages became less common. Dalmatians were no longer needed to help clear thepath for the quickly moving horses. Even though we no longer use Dalmatian dogs on fire engines, we should not forget theimportant job that these hard-working dogs had in the years before the invention of the car.
