問題詳情

五、閱讀測驗題:﹙5題,每題 2分,共10分﹚You've heard of smart phones, but how about smart roads? If an idea by an electrical engineer in the US state of Idaho catches on, smart roads could become a reality in America in the future. What is a smart road? It's a road that is made out of super-strong glass that has solar batteries inside. During the day, the batteries inside the roads would collect energy, which could be used in various ways. One use of this stored energy would be to heat the roadways in the winter to get rid of dangerous snow and ice on them. Another use would be to light the roadways themselves for better visibility and to harness the energy for electric signs embedded on the roads advising drivers to slow down because of curves ahead, for example.Clearing and lighting up highways and freeways during the wintertime in America is just one use for the energy created by smart roads. Since the amount of energy collected would be far more than needed for just heating road surfaces, it could be used for other purposes as well. Scott Brusaw, the American electrical engineer who came up with the idea, believes the revolutionary roads could help provide an abundance of solar power for America. Furthermore, if other countries also adopted Brusaw's smart roads, they could become a global solution for increasing energy demand. Although the concept has a lot of potential, one factor that may restrict its acceptance is the price: each mile would cost a whopping $4.4 million dollars. Brusaw says that amount would be offset by the energy savings from traditional power sources that the system would provide.
