Indeed, traveling has opened my eyes not only to the wonders of the world, but also to the problems our earth is currently facing. Everyone knows how important natural resources are to a country’s economy, but we may not understand what these resources mean to the earth’s natural balance. Visiting such places as the oil fields of Saudi Arabia, the vast forests of Canada, and the clean natural freshwater springs of Central Europe really showed just how valuable our natural resources are. Already, damage to the environment has been caused by the people who are taking too much, too often.An example of damage caused by such short-term thinking and human greed is the effect of deforestation. This is the removal of forested areas by humans. One-fifth of tropical rainforests were destroyed between 1960 and 1990. It is estimated that at this rate, tropical jungles may stop to exist by 2090. The loss of forests has, in turn, increased the Greenhouse Effect, since trees remove carbon from air. Without our forests, the water cycle is also affected. Without trees to release water from the ground into the air, some areas have drier climates than before. The loss of forests also causes soil erosion and natural disasters, such as landslides. If we do not take action against practices like deforestation, the environment will surely suffer, perhaps permanently.
