   Floods and droughts are among the world’s most serious natural disasters in terms of economic losses and human deaths. 31. They caused over $22 billion in damages, killing or injuring more than .120,000 people. Droughts are even worse. They can last for decades and result in even greater economic suffering and loss of human life. Floods and droughts seem to have very different causes: too much water in the case of floods, and too little in the case of droughts. 32.                            Environmentalists agree that man’s poor use of land often increases the chance of droughts and floods. 33. With the loss of trees and other native plants, the soil becomes compacted and nutrients washed away, creating poor soil. Poor soil and soil covered with buildings or asphalt(柏油)are not able to absorb valuable water. 34. Crops wither and die. Then, when a storm brings heavy rainfall, the rivers and lakes overflow and the water lies in floods on top of the parched earth.        Nature is the force behind heavy rainfalls or extended dry periods. 35. It seems that water and land management is essential if we are to lessen the occurrence of floods and droughts. 
(A) As a result, during extended dry times, the land becomes parched. 
(B) In fact, though, the origin of these catastrophes is often the same. 
(C) During a recent five-year period, over 160 serious floods occurred around the world. 
(D) However, humans and our actions are often the cause of floods and droughts.
(E) For example, slash-and-burn farming, where the forest is removed to grow crops, degrades the land.
