問題詳情

VI. Reading Comprehension (20% 每題 2 分)(1)There is a famous story about America’s first president, George Washington. WhenWashington was a young boy, he got an ax as a gift. To try the ax, he cut down his father’s cherrytree. When his father saw his tree cut down, he was angry and questioned his son. Young Georgewas afraid, and thought about telling a lie, so he wouldn’t be punished. But at the last moment, hechanged his mind and answered honestly.     Most people agree that this story is not a true one. It was invented later by people who wantedto make the president look like a good, honest man. True or not, it shows how difficult it is to admitit when we do something wrong. Young George could see his father was angry. It would have beeneasier to lie and say someone else cut the tree down.     When we admit doing something wrong, we have to face whatever happens next. No one likesto be wrong, look foolish, or be embarrassed. When we confess, we may get into trouble from aparent, neighbor, teacher, or friend. We might be punished. We might have to replace something welost, took, or broke. We might even have to pay money to make up for what we’ve done. Evenwhen there’s a price to pay, the truth is always better than a lie. It takes real courage to confessdoing something wrong, but honesty is always the best way to go.
