48.~ 50.                                  A School Where Students Set the Rules Imagine a school where the students decide what they are going to do in class each day. They can alsonot attend classes if they don’t want to. They set the rules. Impossible? Well, no. There really is such aschool, and it is very successful.    Summerhill School is in a small town in England. It is a private school with only about seventy students. Many of these students have learning difficulties. It is hard for them to fit in with others in most governmentschools where the classes are large and the teachers have little time to attend to students individually.    There are rules in Summerhill School, but it is the students who set them. They decide what they shoulddo and should not do in class. There is a small group made up of students and one or two teachers to makesure students follow these rules. The students, however, do not give much trouble. They can choose thelessons they want to attend and not do homework if they don’t want to. Strange as it may seem, most of thestudents do well and score top grades in the national exams.   The principal of the school believes that its success is because of the fact that it is the students who makemany of the important decisions. “If you give students more control, they are likely to be serious students.Learning becomes more important to them and they work harder at school.” attend 出席;參加 private 私人的 difficulty 困難 fit in 相處融洽 attend to 注意;關心individually 逐個地 make up 組成 principal 校長 From :Learners publishing
