問題詳情

五、閱讀測驗: 請依文意選出一個最適當的答案,每題 2 分,共 10 分。Several years ago, Harry, Niamh and Terence set out on their mission to find their “Twin Strangers” using only the powerof social media. As their hunt got all the rage, the people of Facebook answered. While most “matches” were only distantlysimilar when viewed with a tilted head through half-closed eyes, once in a while, a jaw-dropping doppelgänger showed up.Niamh has been the most successful, first finding Karen, and then a second match – Luisa from Italy. As is known, identical twins, who are biological clones of each other and share the exact same genome, are known fortheir striking resemblance. However, “unrelated” strangers such as Niamh, Luisa and Karen also resemble each other – how canthis be? It is important to remember that not only close familial heritage that can give rise to resemblance between people –after all, humans share the majority of our genome, and only slight differences give rise to the variety of physical characteristicswe see. So, it may simply be up to probability that within such a vast and growing population, two faces of complete strangerswill have similar features, especially if they are from a similar ethnic group. There’s also the case of our brains. It has been found that evolution is responsible for the huge diversity in human faces, aswe evolved to rely on our face as a tool to recognize friend and foe. Over time, both the diversity in faces and our ability torecognize these differences have improved. Humans have a highly specialized region in the brain, termed the fusiform face area, which is responsible for giving us the ability to recognize and differentiate between individuals. However, if you’ve ever beentold you look “exactly” like someone only to wonder what is wrong with your friend’s eyesight, it’s a perception thing. Whilewe know ourselves best — we’ve seen our own faces every day almost since the day we were born — our friends might see afew similar features that stick out to them and equate that with looking “exactly” like you.Nevertheless, it’s interesting that our facial attributes are like a spinning wheel of features. With seven billion people in theworld, it’s fun — if not a bit eerie — to think that someone out there looks so much like us that even we have to do adouble-take.
