Born in Odense, Denmark in 1805, Andersen lived a lifethat turned out to be the stuff of fairy tales, a rags-to-richesstory. Despite enduring the most miserable of childhoods, Andersenhad unbreakable self-confidence. At the age of 14, he decided toleave for Copenhagen. He failed to gain employment in the theater andwas close to starving when a wealthy man noticed him and became hisbenefactor. Andersen was sent to school and began traveling aroundEurope and making friends in high society.    Andersenpublished his first collection of fairy tales in 1835, which gainedhim almost immediate recognition that continued to grow throughouthis life. Andersen’s experiences gave substance to his tales. Nostory mirrors his own life as closely as “The Ugly Duckling,”first published in 1843. Unattractive and ridiculed by others, theduckling finds himself facing life alone. Finally, he becomes abeautiful swan, just like how Andersen’s life went from struggle tosuccess.    Andersondied in 1875. Today, over one hundred years after his death, hisfairy tales are read all around the world in more than 150 differentlanguages—that’s more translations than almost any other author.
