The Titanic was such a big, strong ship that mostpeople thought that nothing could ever happen to it.Unfortunately, this idea was not correct.     The Titanic is not famous because of its size. It is famous fora very sad reason. On the night of April 14, 1912, the Titanicsank in the icy water of the North Atlantic Ocean on its first trip.It was going from England to New York City. About 1,600 milesnortheast of New York City, the ship hit a large iceberg. Thismade a hole in the side of the ship that was 300 feet long. Waterentered the ship through the hole, and the ship began to sink.    The ship sank slowly, so there was time for everyone toleave the ship. However, there were not enough lifeboats for the2,200 people. Men gave their places to women and children, somost of the people who survived were women and children.
