VI. Reading Comprehension 10%Oftentimes we reduce sportsmanship to being gracious in defeat and humble in victory, or we define a “good sport” as someone who doesn’t celebrate excessively. We are entertained by end zone celebrations, but irritated by how cocky and puffed-up athletes like TO and Ocho Cinco are. We hate to see Manny Ramirez stand in the batter’s box until his home run reaches the seats, and K-Rod do his best “I just got shot in the chest” every time he strikes a batter out. Dwight Howard’s “I am Superman” routine is starting to nauseate some people as well. And so for us, sportsmanship is when Barry Sanders would score a TD, hand the ball to the ref, and run over to the sideline, or when Ray Allen hits a three and quietly trots to the other end of the court…Yet, sportsmanship is better defined by true heart-felt actions. Milwaukee Madison senior Johntell Franklin, who lost his mother to cancer on Saturday, Feb. 7, decided he wanted to play in that night's game against DeKalb High School after previously indicating he would sit out. He arrived at the gym in the second quarter, but Franklin's name was not in the scorebook because his coach, Aaron Womack Jr., didn't expect him to be there. Rules dictated Womack would have to be assessed a technical foul, but he was prepared to put Franklin in the game anyway. DeKalb coach Dave Rohlman and his players knew of the situation, and told the referees they did not want the call. Yet, the referees insisted that it was a rule and it had to be enforced. The Dekalb team huddled to decide who was going to take—and intentionally miss—the 2 technical free throws. Darius McNeil was eager to volunteer to shoot the free throws and miss them, and he did it as a gesture of sportsmanship for “the guy who lost his mom.” The two schools had met twice previously, and this one ended with a Madison victory, but as in the other games, they also shared a pizza dinner. "Four kids to a pizza, two Madison kids and two DeKalb kids," coach Womack said. "We were sympathetic to the circumstances and the events," coach Rohlman said. “Even though we lost the game, it was a true life lesson, and it's not one our kids are going to forget anytime soon."
