Australia is located only a few thousand miles from Antarctica. As a result, theAustralian Antarctic Division (AAD), an agency of the Australian government, is able toconduct extensive research there. To prepare for these missions, NASA isstudying how people live and work together for months on end at the AAD stations inAntarctica. This knowledge will help NASA prepare its space travelers for planetarymissions. It will also help NASA understand the special medical needs that will exist onits missions and the medical skills that its space travelers will need to have.
