This incident inspired theMontgomery Bus Boycott, a nonviolent campaign led by Martin Luther King Jr. Theboycott continued for 382 days. Eventually, the boycott was deemed a successbecause it resulted in the United States Supreme Court’s decision to outlaw racialsegregation on all public transportation. Following the success of the boycott, Kingemerged as a leader of the civil rights movement at the national level, and along withother African leaders, such as Bayard Rustin, Joseph Lowery, and Ella Baker, wasinstrumental in founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).The SCLC was established as an organization dedicated to the use of nonviolentprotest as a means of achieving civil rights reform. King was one of the organizers ofthe March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. The marchers madedemands for an end to the segregation of public schools, enactment of civil rightslegislation, protection from brutality for civil rights workers, an increase in theminimum wage, and self-government for the District of Columbia. At the march, Kingmade what is generally considered his most influential speech, in which he repeatedlyused the phrase “I have a dream” to convey his vision of a society characterized byinterracial harmony.
