問題詳情

V. Reading Comprehension(5%)Have you ever heard of grey goo? No, it's not something growing down your kitchen sink. It is an imaginary idea from sci-fi.The idea of grey goo is from nanotechnology (奈米科技). Nanotechnology is the study of building with single atoms (原子). The goal is to create computer devices that are millions of times smaller than present ones. In fiction, these small machines will do things such as building spaceships, moving around in our bodies, and curing us of illness. Also from fiction is the idea of grey goo. Grey goo is what will happen if the small machines learn how to make copies of themselves and start eating up the world. One example of how this could happen is if they are released to clean up an oil spill in the ocean. The plan would be for the small machines to eat the carbon (碳) in the oil to remove the spill, but instead, they start to eat all carbon-based matter. They will eat every plant and life form they find. In a matter of days the planet will be dust and the only thing that will exist is grey goo. Some experts tell us that this could not happen because the small machines are so tiny and will not be able to spread quickly. We will be able to control the machines before they take over. Others say we cannot control viruses and bacteria (細菌), so how will we be able to control the small machines? Grey goo is a scary thought, let's hope it stays in sci-fi and never becomes a reality.
