(A)Consumerism is out of control. Whenever a company releases the latest model in asuccessful series of products, people waste hours in line to be among the first to own it. But why are people getting rid of their hardly used products less than a year after purchasing them? It has a little to do with endorphin highs and a lot to do with being trained to believe what is broken cannot be fixed.Luke Soules and Kyle Wiens plan to break the cycle and change the world. The pair met in college while studying at California Polytechnic State University. In one corner of their dorm room was a pile of laptops that no longer worked. Without a manual or any parts, the two searched eBay for pieces to replace those that needed replacing. They fixed the laptops and documented the whole thing with photographs. They even put the images and instructions online. This is the origins of iFixit.com.Electronics are tossed out for a number of reasons—the screen is cracked, the batteries have died, the headphone jack is no longer working. In a given year, 20 to 50 million metric tons of these devices are thrown in the garbage. Currently, there is no green phone on the market, and all two billion phones in disuse can leak harmful chemicals into the soil. The company iFixit follows three principles: repair saves you money, repair saves the planet, and if you can’t fix it, you don’t own it. When reviewing new technology, iFixit rates products according to how easy they are to open and how simple it is to replace parts. Wiens believes everyone should try to extend the life of their technology as much as possible. If you have a damaged screen, replace it rather than throw the device away. “If you have a cracked windshield,” says Wiens, “are you going to throw your car away?”
