問題詳情

( B ) At the end of the year, people look back and review the important events from that year. One way we do this is by choosing a word of the year. The word is either very popular or used very often. It’s usually chosen by dictionary publishers (出版商), like Collins and Cambridge dictionaries. Words of the year are different in different countries.  In 2018, Collins Dictionary chose “single-use” as their word of the year. This adjective (形容詞) talks about things that are made to be used only once and then thrown away. Plastic straws, bags, and spoons are examples of single-use products (產品). As people have learned more and more about how plastic pollutes the environment and hurt animals, this word was used a lot in the past year. In fact, the word was used four times more than it was in 2013.  Cambridge Dictionary named “nomophobia” as their word of the year. As mobile phones (手機) have played an important part in people’s lives, being without them can cause stress (壓力) and even fear. Nomophobia comes from a blend of the phrase (片語), “no mobile phone phobia”. Cambridge Dictionary usually chooses the word of the year by themselves, but in 2018 they decided to let people vote (投票).The idea of picking a word or words of the year first started in Germany in 1971. The idea moved into America in 1991. After that, other groups and publishers began following the idea.
