   History is filled with events that capture the spirit of an era, but many of them risk beingforgotten unless they are retold. One such event took place in Taiwan more than eighty years ago,and it involves a high-school baseball team in Chiayi known as Kano. Now, a powerful moviehas been made to bring to light the team’s story.    Set around 1931, when Taiwan was under Japanese rule, Kano relates the team’s path toqualifying for Japan’s celebrated national high-school baseball tournament Koshien. More than sixhundred teams throughout Japan’s empire participated. No one dreamed that a team from the islandof Taiwan could ever win. To everyone’s surprise, though, Kano was qualified for thechampionship game in Kobe, coming in second. This result earned respect for Taiwan andpopularized baseball.    The idea of making Kano came from film director Wei Te-sheng, who came across thebaseball team’s story while doing research for his previous movie Seediq Bale. Inspired by the story,he realized that it would make a great subject for a movie and became the film’s producer.    For Wei, one of the goals of making Kano is to describe the essence of baseball. Therefore,he hired as the film’s director Umin Boya, who had been on school baseball teams since he wasin elementary school. Also, amateur actors who knew how to play the game were preferred overexperienced actors. In fact, all of the main characters in the film are played by people who had atleast five years of experience on school or national teams.    Wei also wanted to let audiences experience “the spirit of the good old 1930s.” To this end, hespent much time researching stories related to that period. He also made sure that the film’s sets andprops looked real enough to transport audiences to that era. By showing us the team’s training andjourney, Kano takes us to a time when baseball was innocent, free from the concerns of moneyand fame that overshadow the game today. A film that can be enjoyed by not only baseballfans, Kano gives us a small piece of history and a great sense of pride.
