PART 5: Reading Comprehension (12%) (1) To achieve a major goal, based on conventional wisdom, you need to think positive.Picture yourself delivering the perfect presentation, and absorb the energy of the audience.Envision the ideal job interview, and imagine yourself on cloud nine when you get the offer.Convincing as these strategies may sound, it turns out that they often go wrong. Many of usare more likely to achieve success when we focus on the aspects that might lead to failure.
(A)   In a series of studies, some psychologists compared strategic optimists and defensivepessimists. A strategic optimist would envision the best possible outcome and then eagerlyplan to make it happen. A defensive pessimist, on the other hand, would take a completelydifferent approach. Even if they have been successful in the past, they are aware that this time could be different. Therefore, they start picturing all the things that could go wrong.
(B) “Whatif I spill coffee on the interviewer? What if I accidentally deliver the presentation in a foreignlanguage? What if I forget my own name?”   It is commonly assumed that strategic optimists outperform defensive pessimists becausethey benefit from confidence and high expectations. However, in a particular study, eventhough defensive pessimists were more anxious and set lower expectations for themselves inanalytical, verbal, and creative tasks, they didn’t perform any worse.
(C) These people wereable to do so well despite their pessimism; as a matter of fact, it is because of their pessimismthat they were doing so well. By imagining the worst-case scenario, defensive pessimistsmotivate themselves to prepare more and try harder.   Strategic optimists and defensive pessimists succeed under different circumstances.
