First, they pick a specific trait from some other plant or animal. 62 By doing this, scientists have already been able to create faster-growing and tastier vegetables, and potatoes that are even able to produce their own insecticides. It looks like science is creating a better tomorrow, but sometimes, looks can be deceiving.     63 Long-term consequences to the environment and human health may not be apparent. Modified plants may spread into the wild and become “super weeds.” Others may compete the original plants out of existence. Some foods may cause allergic reactions in certain people. 64 Would they do the same to humans?    Although some aspects of G.E. foods look promising, the risks and unknowns surrounding them are disturbing. At a very minimum, these new foods should be tested extensively for any short-term to long-term effects on the environment and the health of those that eat them (including animals). 65
(A) Tests done recently on rats found that G.E. potatoes weakened their immune systems and shrunk their internal organs.
(B) There are real risks and dangers associated with the creation and use of G.E. foods.
(C) This was a lengthy and inexact process.
(D) Genetic engineering puts the power of God into Man’s hands, but perhaps, this power, and the responsibility that goes with it, is still too heavy at our present level of technology.
(E) People can easily purchase G.E. foods at supermarkets.(AB) Then, they transplant the gene responsible for that trait into the target plant.
