三、閱讀測驗【請依照段落上下文意,選出最適當的答案】    Animals mate to produce offspring so that their genes are passed along and that their species can keepexisting. Due to their need to reproduce, it seems like finding a mating partner should be a straightforward process.Actually, though, many animals have to resort to certain tactics or tricks, sometimes bizarre or shocking in humans’eyes, to find a partner. Some animals stand out or succeed because they look unique or charming, while othersperform dramatic or even weird rituals to woo a mate.    In the animal kingdom there are many different courting acts. For example, male bowerbirds are fairlyromantic, creating a colorful bower, or an attractive shelter, for their future mate. The female chooses her matebased on the beauty of his bower. The male bowerbird will also dance for the female in an attempt to attract her.Similarly, birds of paradise are best known for the elaborate plumage that males use to attract a female. They alsohave a special dance for luring potential partners, and often tickle them with their colorful feathers.    Porcupines have an unbelievably short mating season: females are only interested in mating for eight to twelvehours per year. When females are ready to mate, they leave urine markings so that males can find them. Malecandidates will travel long distances to compete for a female. Male porcupines then perform an unusual ritual ofurinating on the female from a tree branch. If she is interested in the male, the two will mate; otherwise, she willscream and shake off the urine.    Seahorses are also very extraordinary animals because it is the male that carries the eggs. Members of thisspecies go through a complicated courtship that lasts for days. When male and female seahorses are interested ineach other, they hold tails, swim with their snouts together, and eventually change color to signal that they are readyto mate.    Obviously, evolution has not made mating a straightforward process. Though many single people complainabout being alone, they can take comfort in the fact that they are not forced to endure the strange courting ritualsthat some animals must undergo.
