問題詳情

<B>    Urban renewal involves redeveloping areas of a city that are deemed to have falleninto disuse or disrepair. This is done by demolishing older structures, relocating people andbusinesses in the process, and building new ones in their place. In its modern form, urbanrenewal began in major industrialized cities during the late 19th century. Back then, in citieslike New York and London, certain areas were becoming slum‐like, and were veryovercrowded, so city planners were brought in to revamp those districts. New York would seefurther urban renewal in 1909 with the construction of Central Park, and from the 1930sthrough the 1970s the city was greatly transformed. However, not everyone has benefited from urban renewal, despite the revitalization ofsome areas. It also displaces many people, forcing them to move into housing projects. Manyof these people are minorities who claim they are victims of racial discrimination. What’smore, in building new highways and freeways as part of urban renewal projects, governments run these thoroughfares through neighborhoods that then find themselvesbypassed by the majority of traffic, causing businesses to suffer and local economies tocollapse.   So, while there are many benefits to urban renewal, it can come at a cost. It requirescareful planning and a need to balance the needs of a whole range of people, not just theprivileged few.
