   National Doughnut Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday in June, and this year that fell on Friday, June 1st. Thissweet holiday was created in 1938 as a symbol of hope to honor The Salvation Army Donut Lassies who served the sweet treatsto soldiers on the frontlines of World War I. In fact, 82% are interested in trying flavors likepickle, sriracha and s’mores.   Here are the top adventurous flavors according to a Dawn Foods survey: ■ S’mores (29%) ■ Mango (18%) ■ Alcohol-inspired (17%) ■Breakfast Cereal, Bacon-infused and Peanut Butter & Jelly (three-way tie with 16%)   Even so, tried-and-true flavors remain beloved among the general population. That is, more than 50% prefer ________like chocolate (22%), plain (16%) and old-fashioned (13%). For what it’s worth, this Generation Y doughnut lover prefersglazed doughnuts over all other flavors.   On National Doughnut Day 2018, some chains offered a free doughnut or something else for free. For instance, onNational Doughnut Day between 5 and 10 a.m. this year, the customers who purchased a dispensed beverage at any ofCumberland Farms’ newly-remodeled store locations throughout the Northeast and Florida also received a free doughnut.Doughnut flavors ranged from blueberry cake to cocoa and hazelnut-filled to chocolate-frosted.
