2.　The Greek poet Homer gave us many idioms.　A famous one is Achilles’ heel.　Everyone has his Achilles’ heel, his weak spot.　　    This is the story Homer tells in the Iliad.Achilles’ mother bathed him as a baby in the River Styx to make him immortal, deathless like a god.But she held him by the heel and it did not get wet.The heel, therefore, was the one spot where Achilles could be hurt, possibly killed.Later, he was in the Trojan war.None of the Trojan weapons was able to hurt Achilles.The god Apollo, however, knew of Achilles’ weak spot and told Paris about it.Paris then shot an arrow at Achilles’ heel and killed him.　　     Who among us does not have Achilles’ heel?Even a man made of stone sooner or later will show his weak spot.It changes as we get older, but in youth it is love.　Love leaves us helpless.We soon find ourselves turning head over heels in it.　This phrase needs no explanation.It is a clear picture of one who has fallen violently in love.He is its victim and seems to spin like a wheel, turning over and over, like an acrobat who cannot stop somersaults.Sometime in the early 1900s, the American underworld began to use heel to describe a thief, the lowest kind of small-type criminal.People working in the circus and carnival shows broadened its use.They began to call a scoundrel, any kind of deceitful, untrustworthy or dishonest person, a heel.　　    In a way, he is closely related to another kind of heel.This one has been around in American politics for well over a hundred years.He is a ward heeler.He was given this name because he was said to be a man who, like a dog, comes to heel, is quick to obey his master, the boss of the ward.A ward heeler is an all-around political party aid in the different election districts, or wards.He does all sorts of work for the local party.He tries to get votes and does just about everything the party boss orders him to do.
