問題詳情

五、閱讀測驗:     Mainly due to the high demand for ivory in some Asian countries, elephant poaching is yet again on the rise. In 2009, over14,000 different products made from body parts of elephants were seized, which made scientists issue certain warnings. Most experts agree that some rapid developing economies, such as China and India, are to blame for the high ivorydemand. With their stronger and growing economies, an increasing number of people in these countries can now afford ivory, which hasbecome something like the status symbol for the middle class in these countries, particularly because of the soaring price of ivoryover the last couple of years. According to the estimate of scientists, in order to meet the high ivory demand, around 8% to 10% of Africa’s elephants arenow being killed annually. This is really an alarming situation, which puts the world’s largest animals once again in great danger. As a result, many elephants are being slaughtered by merciless poachers who only care about money.     To the disappointment of many scientists, cruel elephant poaching will just go on as long as there is high demand for ivory. What’s worse is that it’s very difficult to find a solution to this problem. The only certain fact is that elephants, especially thoseliving in Africa, need much more protection because poaching gangs are becoming more and more organized, and there are notenough rangers to stop them.
