五、閱讀測驗:5% (每題1分)    E-wasterefers to unwanted computers, cell phones, TVs, and other high-techgarbage. Most e-waste comes from wealthy, developed countries in thewestern world, where people can pay for new things and replace theseproducts more frequently. And now e-waste has become a problem inChina.   Economicslies behind China’s growing e-waste problem. In developedcountries, it’s expensive to properly and legally get rid ofe-waste, while it’s much cheaper to export it to China, whereworkers are paid less. Poor safety standards are another factor:China is known as a place where laws are often ignored. Therefore,it’s easy to take shortcuts to save money. Besides, workers whohandle e-waste are poor, uneducated, and uninformed about safetymatters. Therefore, e-waste workers face serious health risks. Forexample, as they melt down e-waste to get the valuable metals inside, they take poisonous air into their lungs. Lung problems and certainkinds of cancer can result. There are the environmental consequences, too. Metals poison the soil and water, and poisonous smoke fromburning plastic pollutes the air.   InChina, the government still doesn’t pass a specific law abouthandling e-waste, and companies in the industry often ignore whatrules are in place. In order to help the workers and protect theenvironment, the government and companies in China and the countriesexporting e-waste must be more responsible.
