問題詳情
【D】Most people have heard of hospitals, but have you ever heard of a hospice? In fact, the words “hospital” and “hospice” both share the same Latin root hospes, which relates to both guests and hosts. However, a hospital and hospice are quite different places. Simply put, a hospital is a place where sick people go in order to get well, and a hospice is a place where sick people go in order to have a peaceful death. The first hospice was thought to have opened in 1065. Connected with the Christian religion, this was a place where the terminally ill could die as peacefully as possible. In the centuries that followed, hospices continued to open first in Europe and later in North America. In the twentieth century, the hospice movement continued to grow because of the work of a British nurse named Cicely Saunders and a Swiss psychiatrist (精神科醫師) named Elisabeth KüblerRoss. These two women changed the way many people viewed death, for they believed those who were dying should meet their end with peace, comfort, and dignity.Basically, a hospice provides people with “endoflife” care. This means the goal is not to prolong life with invasive medical procedures or costly drugs. Instead, hospice workers only control pain to make a person comfortable. In addition, they also provide counseling and other services to the family and friends of a patient. Most people in a hospice are only expected to remain alive for six months or less. Although there are special purposebuilt hospices and hospice centers, patients may receive hospice care in a hospital, in a nursing home, or even in their own homes.Undoubtedly, death is never easy. However, hospices are dedicated to providing the terminally ill with places in which they can spend their final days in peace and with dignity, in as much comfort as possible. For them, hospices have offered a better option for leaving this world.
