II. Reading Comprehension 16%     Miep Gies, who had helped the Frank family during World War II and had been involvedin the 1947 publication of the Diary of a Young Girl, passed away on January 11, 2012. Herdeath reminded people of that young girl, Anne Frank.    During World War II, the Jews lived in dread of the Nazi persecution and massacre. Before going into hiding, Anne wrote about everyday topics, like the special laws that explainedwhat she and other Jews could do, which actually was a list of what they were prohibited fromdoing. While in hiding, Anne completed most of her writings. She often revealed personalthoughts and feelings about the people and things around her. In May 1944, dreaming ofpublishing her work after the war, she revised and rewrote earlier diary entries. After the Frankswere arrested, Miep Gies fetched Anne’s writings from the family’s hiding place, concealedthem until the end of the world, and gave them to Otto Frank, Anne’s father, when she learnedof Anne’s death. To share Anne’s story with his family, Otto Frank typed Anne’s words to forma manuscript, which historians later found and helped publish. Since it includes passages fromAnne’s original diary entries mixed with some rewritten pieces, perhaps Mr. Frank’s versionisn’t exactly what Anne planned to publish. Nevertheless, Anne’s story could finally be told allover the world.
