Nevertheless, when it comes to the origin of the name, not so many people know where it comes from. In fact, the name “marathon” derives from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. Legend has it that when the Greek army defeated the Persians, he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to inform the whole country of the good news. It is said that he kept running the entire distance without taking any rest until he went into the assembly and shouted out “Victory.” Then, he collapsed on the floor and died from exhaustion. This account of the legend first appeared in Plutarch’s On the Glory of Athens in the A.D. 1st century, but the author actually quoted the story from Heraclides Ponticus’s lost work.  However, not everyone is convinced of the historical accuracy of this legend. For instance, the celebrated Greek historian Herodotus described Pheiddippides as the messenger who ran from Athens to Sparta to ask for help and then ran all the way back to Athens. What’s strange is that Herodotus didn’t mention any messenger sent from Marathon to Athens. Herodotus only mentioned that after winning the battle, the Athenian army marched quickly back from the battle to Athens to protect the city. In 1879, Robert Browning wrote the poem Pheidippides, which became part of late 19th century popular culture and was accepted as a historic legend.
